Greetings from Howard University School of Law. As chair of the Luke Charles Moore Invitational (“LCMI”) competition, I cordially invite you to participate in one of the pre-eminent civil rights moot court competitions in the country. Hosted by the Charles Hamilton Houston National Moot Court Team at Howard University School of Law, LCMI will be held February 26 and 27, 2010 in Washington, DC.
LCMI is held in honor of the Honorable Luke Charles Moore. After graduating from Howard University in 1949 with honors, Judge Moore earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He later returned to Howard University School of Law as an adjunct law professor. In 1959, he became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. In 1962, President Kennedy appointed Judge Moore as Chief U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia, making him the first African-American to serve in that capacity since Frederick Douglass in 1877. Ten years later, President Nixon appointed Judge Moore to the Superior Court where he became a senior judge. The Luke Charles Moore Invitational competition is dedicated to honoring Judge Moore’s legacy.
LCMI is one of the few civil rights moot court competitions in the country. Participants have the opportunity to argue these important issues inside the nation’s capital at Howard University School of Law, coined as the birthplace of the civil rights movement. It would be a great honor to have you participate in this year’s competition.
You are invited to send up to two teams. The non-refundable registration fee is $350 for one two-member team or $600 for two two-member teams. Please add $50 to the registration fee if you wish to add a third member to a team. Contestants will be provided with snacks on Friday night, breakfast and lunch will be provided Saturday. In addition, all competitors are encouraged to stay for the awards banquet Saturday evening. Prizes to be awarded at the banquet include $500 for the Best Overall Team, and $250 each for the Best Oralist and Best Brief.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at (718) 772-5944 or via email at SLWard@law.howard.edu. I look forward to receiving your registration forms and having you compete next semester.
Sincerely,
Shomari L. Ward
